"Stop looking for the “right” career, and start looking for a job. Any job. Forget about what you like. Focus on what’s available. Get yourself hired. Show up early. Stay late. Volunteer for the scut work. Become indispensable. You can always quit later, and be no worse off than you are today. But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs."
Agree with this to a certain extent - however I feel just taking any job or the first job that comes up isn't quite the solution... while it may solve a short-term solution, it may not necessarily be good for the long term. I think what this write up is meaning to say is to manage one's expectations and do a reality-check and then take steps to acheive those career goals which in turn would lead to all those things like job satisfaction, etc. So yeah that last sentence sums it up pretty well - it all boils down to our individual belief system and what we deem to be value for what we get from the job.
ReplyDeleteTrue, there's external factors to consider, but what i read from the above is how fussy we've become as we progress, and we force ourselves into certain ideals because we won't accept less than $$$ etc, and in this day and age, we worry so much about achieving goals we just become another drone in the army of corporate drone workers out there.
ReplyDeleteI believe we have to ask ourselves; at the end, what is really important to you?
